Once possibly the largest private home in America by 1790, the Hampton mansion serves as a grand example of late-Georgian architecture in America. Hampton is also the story of its people, as the estate evolved through the actions of the Ridgely family, enslaved African Americans, European indentured servants, and paid laborers within a nation struggling to define its own concept of freedom. Join local artist Carol Higgs for a demonstration of Journaling with ink and watercolor.

ARTIST STATEMENT |  WATERCOLOR + MIXED MEDIA

I loved to draw as a child and always wanted to be an artist, I attended Antioch College where I received a BA in media studies for art, film and literature. I continued my art education with classes at Maryland Institute, College of Art.

While forming a graphic design studio in Washington, D.C serving non profit organizations, I continued to paint, draw and study– traveling with art supplies around the world to capture the light and colors that are unique to a place with watercolors.

I exhibit locally and continue to study with famed Vermont artist Susan Abbott. Watercolor fascinates me – I focus on landscape scenes drawing in plein air and incorporate vibrant bold color and loose brush strokes. I am never without a sketchbook to create small ink renderings of people and street scenes, in real time.

Join us for an exhilarating day of artistic exploration at the Historic Hampton Mansion Site! This event promises to ignite inspiration among artists of all mediums as they immerse themselves in the rich surroundings of this iconic location.

We're delighted to announce that TAC will be hosting acclaimed artist Carol Higgs, who will be demonstrating her expertise in two diffrent painting styles: travel journaling and plein air watercolor techniques. Carol will be on-site to offer guidance and insights as you create your own masterpieces amidst the historic charm of Hampton Mansion.

In addition to the creative buzz, talented photographers will be capturing the breathtaking vistas and compelling compositions that unfold throughout the property.

We extend a warm invitation to all artists to join us for this enriching day, providing a perfect opportunity to hone your craft and connect with fellow creatives.

Following the day's activities, there will be two separate receptions held in the Orangery to display the completed works (date to be determined). The first will feature a captivating photography show, while the second will showcase stunning oils and watercolor works. We invite you to be a part of what we hope will become a cherished tradition at the park.

Best of all, there are no fees for the day – attendance is completely free. Weather permitting, it's set to be a beautiful day filled with the vibrant artistry of our talented community. Don't miss out!
