Story of Each Painting CORNFIELD SENTINEL - This farmhouse in Carroll County is crowded on the east and south by cornfields. The family also runs a small market on the site stocked with in-season farm fresh produce and beautiful on-site grown flowers. On a warm day in the fall, before Halloween, the sun dips behind the house, backlighting this magnificent example of rural American architecture. I did this painting en plein air* standing in the front yard. DUSK - This is a painting done in a technique known as redaction. A color is applied all over the canvas surface, top to bottom, side to side. In this case a mix of Burnt Sienna and Raw Umber serves as the ground cover. Once the color is down, the paint wiped off, and the under painting of the mixed color remains as a tint on the canvas. In this case, the yellow glow is what remained behind the trees and cornfield. So, essentially, you’re looking at a two-toned canvas. One tone very light and the other tone is dark. This painting was inspired by Maryland’s Eastern Shore and the farm fields that literally run right up to the loblolly pines tree lines. (Price: $1750) MAINE - DOWN EAST - A view from my favorite lobster pound in Maine. This peninsula juts out into Penobscot Bay. Out at the end of the peninsula a lone tree sits braced against wind and tide. I am standing on the north shore of Belfast Bay as I paint this work. On the south side of the Bay sits the historic ship building town of Belfast. This is my interpretation of the shoreline leading out to the tree and on into the mists of Penobscot Bay. (Price: $1400) FERRY LANDING SUNRISE - From the 1870s to the 1940s and 50s a ferry ran between Berlin, Maryland and Assateague Island. Residents and visitors would catch the ferry over to Assateague to picnic and explore the island. When the hurricane came through in 1933 and split the barrier island in two, Ocean City was north of the inlet and Assateague was south. The ferry fell on hard times and stopped running as development on Assateague stopped. But, the ferry landing location remained. The painting overlooks the scene visitors would see approaching Assateague by ferry. Painted en plein air. (Price: $800) *en plein air - a painting done outdoors standing in front of the subject. |
